Is 15 across Cobbler's punch as gin is usually the base for this drink rather than beer?

According to the Gospel of St Chamber's:

a hot drink made of beer, with the addition of spirit, sugar and spice

It was also accepted as correct in the online version.
Only Chambers gave beer as the base for a cobbler's punch. All the other references I found talked about gin and treacle (!!) or sherry being used to make this drink.
