Still not working

Still having troublwith PC windows XP Compaq Pressario. When in desktop screen with Start at bottom left hand corner I try to click on start or any other logos but nothing happens. Cannot even turn PC off have to pull plug out at back.
Have bought new keyboard and mouse but made no difference. Screen shows "found new hardware" but cannot click on to it. The pointer moves around the screen ok
Any ideas? TIA..

This is a bit of a long shot but it sometimes works.

Try booting into Safe Mode. (Press F8 during the boot process). Then (assuming that the 'Start' button now works), shut down, switch the computer off, wait 10 seconds and switch it on again.

During the booting press F8 key, you will see here start up menu choose "last good configuration mode". you computer will start with that position when it was working fine.
