I saw a Barn Owl yesterday afternoon at about 2.30. It was broad daylight and OK weather!!! I could'nt believe it, it just flew across my garden, quite low and in no kind of rush. I was truely amazed. has anyone else seen these birds at this time of day.

Ironically, I've been listening to the Tawney Owels that live at the bottom of my garden for the last 18 months (ever since I moved here, and I've NEVER seen one!!!)

Barn owls are rarely seen at that time of the day unless the prey is scarce and they need to extend their hunting expeditions. No doubt the colder weather has something to do with it.
It's true what wildwood's just said. I assume that the need for food had something to do with it.
Speaking of unusual things though, I saw two huge bumble bees flying past today.
Barn owls as are most rarely seen during daylight, I have only seen two during the daylight, but at dusk and dawn I have seen them many times, what did you think of it Chaffinch?, to me they are the most beautiful bird, well apart from the majestic kingfisher that I have ever seen.
Are they filming a Harry Potter film near you?
we have one here that flys about the field at the front of ours most afternoons from about 3 onwards
So strange that you should post this because we saw one last Wednesday whilst drving home..it flew right over our car and frightened me to death.Beautiful birds. We too hear them in the woods behind our house but have never seen one.
where do you all live we are on the norfolk /suffolk border we see quite a few in this area
Hi ruthann,I am in Cheshire..a very long way away from you.
Harry Potter's owl was a Snowy, not a Barn Owl!!
Strangely enough, we have just been chatting in work because someone saw a barn owl yesterday afternoon in daylight. She was in Somerset, we were just saying how rare it is to see one.
Have watched Barn Owls regularly in mid afternoon on the reserve at Otmoor, have seen one hunting at 11am in April at Bempton Cliffs, mid morning in the Ouse Washes and midday just sat on a fence post on one of the Norfolk reserves. Apart from Little Owls which are generally daytime hunters, you are more likely to see a Barn Owl during the day than any other owl in the UK.
