I was surprised to see a Barn Owl sat on my back fence last night, especially so close to town, as we are. My neighbour said he'd seen it earlier in his garden and it seemed to be sheltering behind some large pots as the magpies were attacking it. I didn't think magpies did that. I'll have another look tonight.

Knew magpies attacked smaller birds. You're so lucky to see a Barn Owl up close.

Yes, it was quite a surprise. I'm just wondering if it's injured in some way.
It's probably just desperate for food. The late cold snap we had messed them up a bit and they are trying to get weight on to breed.

We've seen several around our garden - but we do live in the back of beyond.
Yes, I think it fairly common for owls to be mobbed if they are out during the day.
I occasionally see tawny owls being modded by crows.
I live in town and every evening at dusk a barn owl flies past my window. See it during the day, too, but no regular pattern.

Thanks for the replies folks. The barn owl is still here. That's three nights in a row now. We are not located in "the back of beyond", as Barmaid said. We are quite close to the town centre, so I figure it has seen something nearby that takes it's fancy. Nice to see it though.
