The first regular broadcasts commenced on 1st july 1967 on BBC 2 but varoius test programs had been made for several years (not sure when these began )

The Virginian started in colour on BBc2 as a test programme in early 1967 and james Drury was on the cover of the radio times in a feature about it being in colour.

Also The BBC started to record some of it's programmes in colour sometime about the mid 50's even though they were still broadcast in B&W in this country for several years. they recorded them in colour for overseas markets (America) that had colour earlier than us.

Most people didn't have colour TV's in their homes until the 1970's as they were so expensive. Also, most people rented their TV's in those days.

We didn't have a colour TV until 1975. Before that, we held the coloured cellophane wrappers from Quality Street chocolates over our eyes as a poor substitute.

ChuckFickens, the BBC didn't make any programmes in colour purely for foreign sales, I think you are thinking of ITC.

The first British TV series made in colour was one of my faves....'Stingray'. It had to sell in the US market so thats why it was made in colour (or even color!).

My grandparents got one first in our family, about 1970. I remember the picture being too pink, but not knowing what to expect I thought this was normal.
When we bought one the first programme I watched on it was Scooby Doo!!
