in this episode he revealed that his entire planet was now just rocks and dust and everyone was dead because of a war and he was the last timelord alive.am i missing something here or could he simply go back in time and prevent the war ?!

And it's the lack of lateral thinking like that, which makes this new series utter pants.
I read that Time Lords are prevented (in some way) from travelling in time/changing history on their home planet of Gallifrey.

my son has pointed out to me that maybe this will be addressed in a future episode !

time will tell(pardon the pun!)

It's known as a story arc, something that will run from episode to episode and we the viewers will be rewarded with the pay-off at the end of the series.

Messing around with tiem...ooooh...Paradoxes , the Butterfly effect etc ....not a good idea!
