Am I right in thinking that a millionarie businessman paid a lot of money at a charity auction to find out who the song your so vain was written about? He could have saved himself a fortune and given me a ring, I would have told him for half the price!

Sorry I almost forgot to say it was the actor Warren Beatty (or so I was told)

Not sure about the businessman bit -

but the actual subject, if indeed it is one person, is something Carly Simon has never revealed.

The strong rumour is Warren Beatty, but another front runner is Mick Jagger, also a 'personal friend' of the singer, who provides backing vocals on the recording.
Kris Kristofferson has also been linked to this song along with a few others
I heard it was James Taylor, dont know where that came from
Yeah I remember when the song first came out that it was runoured to be Beatty and then Jaggar.

I think the James taylor connection was from when they were in a relationship, never heard hristofferson linked, he was with Rita Coolidge at the time.

was Killing me sofly inspired by Don McLean or was that James Taylor?
Did the milloionaire businessman find out the real answer?
Don Mclean dotty.
I agree - Warren Beatty
I can reveal, once and for all, Carly Simon was refering to Mick Fleetwood (or so I was told).
I think Carly Simon was married to James Taylor and it was either him or Mick Jagger as I remember. Not that I was there at the time.
dot and boo, killing me softly was inspired by bob dylan.
