It is generally thought to be about Warren Beatty, whether Carly ever admitted to that I dont know.

I think it's about James Taylor.

I believe like Don it is about Warren Beatty.

However.............Have you ever actually thought about the song lyrics ??

You're so vain, I bet you think this song is about you.

Well the song is about them isn't it? Ms Simon is actually playing into the hands of the vain ones??

Ergo... If I was Mr Beatty I would take the bet.

Weird or am I being too post-modern??

I heard it was meant to be about Warren Beatty or Mick Jagger.  Jagger sings backing vocals on it - so I guess that leaves Beatty?

Apparently only 3 people know for sure; Carly Simon, the guy and some American big shot who paid 50,000 dollars in a charity auction a few years back. Carly Simon whsipered it in his ear and he is now sworn to secrecy.

Maybe Im wrong but I think Warren Beatty comes across vainer that James Taylor.  Great song though.  And I apologise to Warren if he is reading this.
I heard it was about Kris Kristofferson.
definately warren beatty
its definatly about warren beatty because one she said that it has an a an r and an e in it mick was singing back up so it wouldnt of been him, warren called and thanked carly for the song and she said i bet you think this song is about you... a number of times she has denied that the song is about mick jagger and hasnt actually said no its not about warren beatty she has changed the subject or said im not going to tell you ect
