i was watching only fools and horses the other night and was wondering about the laughs of the audience on outside scenes. do they actually record the audience laughing and edit it in with the scene? i don't think they would have a audience outside or maybe they do?

When I've seen sitcoms, they show any external scenes (already shot) on monitors in the studio - and the audience's laughter etc is recorded. They probably would edit in other laughter from the live bits if this weren't loud enough.
They shot the Batman and Robin episode here in Bristol, where I work. It was done at about 3 in the morning and there were certainly not many people about.
quiz monkey is right,
i went to see a fools and horses being filmed years ago, it was a christmas special... remember the peckham spring water one? lol ... and yeah they showed the outside scenes on monitors and recorded the studio audience laughter as we watched them. while these scenes were being shown to us, del and rodders came and stood right by where we were sitting on the front row. it was great seeing it filmed, although it did kind of spoil the 'belief' that they really did live on the 15th(?) floor of nelson mandella house lol ..
oh and i also came away with an actual bottle of the 'peckhmam spring water' !
it was a nice experience and will always remember it.
:o)

thanks for the answers. I would have loved to have seen a the show live but most of them were recorded when i had little interest in the show being a young child in the 80's and early 90's. Well that clears that up anyway thanks
