I don't usually have my hair cut at the hairdresser but am going to do so this evening. Should I tip regardless or only if they do a good job? And how much should i tip?

Tips? They charge you money and then you want to give them MORE?

Generally, a 5-10% tip is considered 'appropriate'. Personally, I tip whenever I go - but thats because Ive been going to the same girl for years now, and she works magic on my hair:) But I don't see why you should leave a tip if you're unhappy with your cut - so make sure they know what you want done.
I don't tip when I go mostly because I'm pretty poor most of the time and find salons to be expensive at the best of times, without a tip!

I usually give them a pound, but then I think hey I don't get tips where I work! So it is entirely up to you! I know some people who give 20p up to 2 tips.

I never tip at the hairdressers.  In restaurants you pay for the food and tip for the service. A haircut IS a service, which you're already paying for. So what are you tipping for?

I wasn't going to tip because I am paying for the haircut anyway so why should i then pay more? But some people told me that they always tip too, so i wasn't sure if it was expected or not.
Watch 'Reservoir Dogs'. LOL.
A tip should certainly not be expected, but I once found that when I didn't tip I got a proper filthy look! So I never went back to that hairdressers! Haircuts are quite expensive anyway these days so it does seem daft to pay them more.
Depends on the salon, sometimes you can tip the little junior who washes your hair.  But I never tip the hairdresser as I am paying for the service anyway.
It's like a reward. "I know you could have chosen not to do your best, but you did it for me, so here's 2". On top of the 20 I just paid. No way.
Oh dear, they must love it when they see my name in their appointment book. I always tip my hairdresser 4 or 5 quid even though I pay about 35.00 to have it cut anyway. I always feel really guilty if I don't have any change to give her.
gosh milly you're generous! I'll do your hair for you any day! ;o)
Ive never tipped a hairdresser. I dont tip other service providers like my gardener or window cleaner so dont see why a hairdresser is any different. Plus Im charged 80 for a trim and highlight touch ups every 6 weeks so I think thats more than enough!
I only tip the women at the barber if they are wearing a short skirt or are outrageously flirty.......!
Sorry to conform to all male shallow stereotypes
I agree with Octavius, tip the Junior.  (My daughter is one now!)
I always tip my hairdresser because they are low paid. Just wondered why people tip taxi drivers as they probably earn more than 40K per annum.

thanks for your answers - I didn't tip in the end. It cost 30 and only took 1/2 hr. I think that's fair enough!

Yes, but the 30 goes to the owner of the salon, the girls that actually do the work get a crap salary, I know my ex and her brothers girl did it. She was a shop manager and was earning less than an office receptionist. My haircut costs 8, I always give the girl a 1.  People tip taxi drivers in order to establish a rapport, and thus get a reliable service from what is usually an unreliable trade.
