dvd-r or dvd+r ??

Hi, I want to transfer my videos to dvd using a recordable dvd player. ie put the video in, press play, then press record on the dvd player. What type of discs do i need?

I'm afraid it depends on the recorder you're using. Some like one format, some the other and some handle both. DVD+R is the commoner format from memory. If you have the handbook for the recorder it will tell you in there.
yep + is more common

and what you describe is pretty much how it's done

but put horse and cart in right order ... buy the recorder THEN get discs for it
