having been on Sky for a number of years i have been getting stressed out over loss of signal during rain etc..started looking at cable as my road is geared up for it, am i right in the only supplier is Virgin,Virgin or Virgin ??? or is it possible to get Sky via cable.

Not really, Sky's main business is satellite broadcasting and that's their main delivery platform.
Virgin ( formerly NTL / Telewest / Nynex etc ) is a cable operator, currently the only one available in most of the UK. There have been many over the years but mostly go to the wall as the costs are high vs. subscriber rate. They carry some but not all of the channels broadcast by Sky as well as the 5 main terrestrial channels.

All satellite signals are prone to interference during bad weather as they need to travel through the clouds from above to get to your dish.
