I didn't spot that question until today... I tend to stay away from technology at that sort of time on a Saturday evening. Stella and vodka don't help with techie answers :)

and.. someone implied I was STUPID!!

I don't know why settings seem to change themselves. I had to uncheck an authentication box, and my email arrived. then, I found I couldn't send emails and had to go back and check the box for out-going mail! very confusing, for the likes of me!

anyway, a happy ending!

Windows mail is just a slightly updated outlook express and that has always had a problem with losing it's settings, I guess they didn't sort that problem out.

Make a note of you incoming and outgoing server names and if you continue to get problem just delete the mail account and recreate it is normally the easy way to solve it, you don't lose your mails you already have in doing so either.
