Can anyone advise me? some of the all-in-one printers are really cheap; are there any that come with ink and USB lead too or is it normal to have to pay extra for these? Thanks.

most have ink, few have leads - get them in tesco for a quid, pay no more elsewhere.

The thing is, the replacement cartridges cost so much you could nearly buy a new printer each time... you can get counterfeit ones though.

If you're printing in b/w mostly, I'd actually suggest getting a cheap laser printer from argos - costs about twice the price of an inkjet but the toner lasts a helluva lot longer
I bought a Canon all in one printer a few weeks ago,it came with ink but no USB lead,I bought that separately and it only cost a few quid.
Since these are effectively a loss leader for the manufacturers, who are relying on the sale of the consumable ink cartridges for their profit many cartridges supplied with new units have a reduced ink quantity. Otherwise, as Wickerman says, you could just buy another printer, rather than a new set of cartridges.

The cost of printer ownership is heavily dependant of the cost of ink cartridges, before you buy, check that cheap compatibles are readily available.

thanks all, great advice. How can I check where the cheap cartridges are to be bought and if they are compatible? As you say it is so expensive to buy ink.
look on ebay for compatible cartridges. You can usually pick them up easily enough. The listings will say which printers they're for.
Just search for the printer name.

Usually, the cartridges that come with the printer are full, but because it takes a fair bit of ink to charge the printheads initially they seem to not last as long as the next ones that you buy.
I use an Epson Stylus Photo RX425 . . three in one

Excellent printer, especially for colour prints.

Bought from Computer Fair locally for 55. And the four compatible colour cartidges cost 1 each - yes 1, from the same Computer Fair!!!

Can recommend.
