It's my wife's birthday in April and I want to take her somewhere romantic, and a bit different ...

We have plans to go to Venice, Barcelona and Egypt later in the year - and I'm working in Munich right now.

So I guess my question is - Where have you been that you would recommend as worth sharing for a short break!?

i would recommend naples italy it has a lovely warm climate historical old buildings a vibrant street life from here a 2 euro train ride will take you to romantic sorrento. you could also try taking the ferry and rubbing shoulders with the film stars on the isle of capri or maybe take it easy by relaxing in the thermal waters on the isle of ischia the remains of pompei are also nearby or for a tripa lottle further afield rome is a 10 euro direct train ride from napoli central station so if you want romance great sights and history make it naples

3 couples I know have been to Rome for the weekend recently and all have really loved it.  One couple even got engaged!  Still waiting for the boyfriend to take me away though....

My (now) fiance took me to Rome for a long Valentines weekend this year and proposed to me - (and yes I said yes.)  I couldn't think of anywhere I'd rather have been.  Absolutely fantastic and I imagine the weather would be perfect in April - not too hot.

Also been to Prague, Venice and Paris and would recommend all three.

If you want an alternative to cities- the highlands  or islands of scotland.

specifically - Taychreggan hotel,or the Garenin black house on Lewis
I would recommend Copenhagen, Denmark or Seville, Spain

Thank you all for your answers! Some great suggestions and I appreciate every one.

Alas I've been to pretty much all of them. Sorrento&Capri really was fantastic ... yeah, will have to go back. Rome IS fantastic too. Also done and agree with Prauge and Paris. Have done Venice and is so unique we are already going again.

On top of that I used to live in Scotland for a few years and I know how beautiful the Highlands are, and couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Winner of a Creme Egg for me is luckystrike .... I've not been to Copenhagen actually - or Seville actually so Denmark is looking promising.

Cheers for ALL the suggestions!

The most beautiful place i've ever been too is Cinque Terre...5 little fishing villages all clustered together in Italy not too far from Genova.

The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and the place is so relaxing because its off the beaten trail a little (althoguh really easily accessible by rail).  It's only a suggestion but for a romantic short break i reckon it'd be perfect...check it out

Why thank you SteveH75!

If you are considering Copenhagen, check out this earlier thread.

Valencia is very romantic and, so far, not swamped with tourists.
Why not try Florence or Bologna? It's best to fly to Pisa for Florence and get the train through to Florence at the airport. Look at the Venere site for hotels - there are good maps and comments there, though you might find that booking direct with the hotels works out cheaper. The Hotel Calzaiuoli is in a brilliant position in Florence and has spring offers at the moment.
