Much as I don't think it is right that a man in his 20s should be having sex with a 12 year old girl, I believe the judgement was correct:

However, I do think the girl needs some sort of help and / or punishment. An offence has been committed and the man is not to blame.

Like you, I don't see how he can be blamed here, If he genuinely believed she was 19. The poor sod will no doubt carry this awful experience around for the rest of his life now. It must be mortifying.

Not sure about her needing help, the devious little mare needs a ruddy good slap in my opinion.
Help would be wiser than punishment for the girl, I think; she is still at an age where her life could maybe be put back on track. The man was lucky that she had put some sort of evidence of her fantasy life online; otherwise he might well not have been believed.

My hair "died" years ago :-).
It is easy today for a young girl to pass herself off as older. They do it all the time to get into clubs.
No matter how grown up she might think she is she needs to be told that in this case lieing about her age was just plain wrong and she has to be helped to see the trouble she has caused by doing it.
i feel a bit sorry for him really. How was he to know.
I duped by a 15 year old boy once into selling him booze. I lost my job and he walked away with the booze.
I remember the Graham Rix thing a few years ago and felt he was very harshly treated. If memory serves, he met a 15 year old who passed herself of as a late teen and voluntarily went to his hotel room.

They had sex. He was arrested and jailed and put on the sex offenders register.

Technically (I hate that phrase) he was a paedophile, but his 'crime' was a whole world away from the sickos who get their jollies by shagging young children.
The law should be changed so that the female should be named and shamed in such cases, especially in cases of false accusations of rape.
I see little point in shaming 12-year-old girls, no matter how old they may act. Either you think they're young enough to need the law's protection or you don't.
It is surprisingly easy to be fooled sometimes. A few years ago I was doing my delivery when I saw this vision of a girl walking towards me. Long legs, short skirt, pretty face, cleavage, the lot - she was gorgeous. As she walked by, I started to watch her walk away and a guy at a door saw me and stated laughing. I smiled at him the way that blokes do in mutual appreciation and he said I wouldn't be doing that if I knew how old she was - turns out she was just 12 too. Honestly, if I didn't know and had the chance, I probably would have!
If he was "the best looking" Lord knows what the others looked like!!!

Ethel I disagree with you strongly. As you may be aware I was on a right-wing think tank when the new Sexual Offences Act of 2003 came in to force. Some sections were indeed amended, appended and added due to our diligent and commonsensical approach to the new laws. Naturally there were of course Law Lords on the same tank.

She was 12. End of. Duped or not, this will open up a can of depraved and sick worms for the predatory paedophile. He needs to be chemically castrated and publically whipped for being so damned stupid, as well as biffing a girl of 12, even if she is a sl4g.

The law is the law is the law is the law. There to protect 12 year olds.

I agree with Ethel as I believe that few girls not only dress and try to look lot older than their actual age but even tell lies if asked. I am sure it is not the first time and he is not the first person who was led into believing this way and it has happened before.
Abdul - isn't that tortology - using the words 'right wing' and 'think' in the same sentence?
The issue highighted here is the continual sexualisation of children - a worrying trend for society in general.

This child needs some guidance, as do others in her position, she is a confused damaged child, not a 'sl*g as advised by our resident humanist further up the thread.
I think you mean 'oxymoronic'.
Lesson learnt the hard way....poor sod.....I suppose every bloke out on the pull will have to check passports or driving licence prior to a sh4g...what a sad state of affairs, what happened to little girls looking like little girls. Where are their parents when they are leaving the house plastered in makeup, high heels and skimpy clothes far to old for them?
You're right Quinlad - I was so steamed up I got my grammar wires crossed!
Previous to my first I wish to add (I did not read all the article, sorry) that this man is a CONVICTED

1) Drug dealer
2) Drink Driver
3) Drunken Yob
4) Knife carrier

Regardless of this act of rape, he should burn in acid forever and a day. A complete waste to humanity. I am sure his mother is really proud of him.
I blame her parents totally, and feel sorry for the man concerned. Some 12 year olds do look 19. They may well not act 19, but then neither do quite a few 19 year olds. She was obviously already very sexually experienced.

If my child told me they were staying overnight with a friend then I would check with the friend's parents.
