Right, me and my mum are planning on going to New York in January 09 for 6 nights, but we have no idea what hotel to stay in, we obviously dont wanna be toooooo far out the way from everything, Also we dont wanna spend to much either, to be honest we wanna try and get something pretty cheap, but still nice, and in a decent location

i stayed in the new yorker hotel http://www.newyorkerhotel.com/
on April for 10 days good location opposite madison square gardens, short distance to macys quite easy to walk to times square from here too
the rooms are pretty basic but were clean enough, who really cares what the room is like you'll be too busy out sightseeing!
If flying in to Newark you can get the train straight into Penn Station which is about 10 mins from the hotel. Subway stations nearby, walked most of new york!!!
If you like film locations google new york film locations suggested this to someone else who posted about New York, we didn't take a tour we found most of the locations our self if you have a good map or travel guide my favourites were the friends apartment block and the house from Breakfast at tiffanys!

I stayed at the Milford Plaza which is just one block from Times Square. The rooms are nice, not too basic, and clean. Apart from the location and the decent rooms the other nice thing is that you have to show your room card to get into the lifts, so it feels a safe hotel.

I have also stayed at the Pennsylvania, which is right opposite Madison Square Gardens. The rooms were much more basic and you didn't have to show your room card to get into the lifts (although this was advertised, in practice it didn't happen).

Would have to agree with spudqueen and say the milford plaza. Great location, comfortable rooms and a decent price. Stayed there 2 years ago so hopefully its still affordable.

For good money saver, would definately recommend getting the new york bus from the airport (if you are interested i am sure i can find a link). Cost me and my partner about 20 dollars (approx 8 each) and this was for a return ticket. Pickup and drop off at Port Authority was perfect for the milford plaza. Took about 10 mins if that to walk from drop off to hotel and visa versa.
