During a discussion, someone made the assertion that people on benefit get an extra 4 per week if they have a dog, and that homeless people shared the dogs to get more money.

Now I am pretty sure that this is untrue, but wanted to know if anyone knows for definite.

I heard that one in the 70s but I think it refers to guide dogs,
I wonder if you could claim for a security guard dog?

In some areas people on benefits do still get free - or discounted - animal care/vet services.
no, that is really not true.. but very amusing!

It would be amusing if it were not for the fact that the person saying this is a Borough and County Councillor.
vic - now that is worrying, not amusing!
no it's tosh.
I think the benefit system wouldprobably penalise you for having a dog ,claiming that you had an asset you could use for food and thus need less to live on for a while
