Keeping an area weed free

Can you recommend the cheapest way to keep an area of approximately 14' square free from weeds. As I am on a tight budget I was wondering if having shingle/stones laid would be more economical than a patio? Do you have any other suggestions please?

if putting down stones, be sure to lay weed suppressing membane first, because if you don't you'll be forever pulling up weeds. Stones will be much quicker to lay than a patio, but I'd not recommend it if you have youngsters around as the temptation to throw them around is too great.
