lankeela's post made me remember an incident that happened in Washington DC: An aide to the mayor used the word "n!ggardly" (note the letter A)"in reference to a budget cut or some such thing and the outrage was unbelievable resulting in the aide resigning his post. I find it ridiculous that just b/c people are too ignorant to grasp the English language that this guy resigned. He later was re-offered a position and took it. The 2 similar sounding words do not even have the same etymology, or root, so it was ridiculous. I admit I did not know the word, but looked it up when I heard the news and just laughed at the whole thing. FYI":It means skint, or stingy

Ha, when I tried to post it with the correct spelling the site blocked the word. It is not a bad word!!!!!

Dickens used '*******' to describe Scrooge. It does indeed mean miserly. I wouldn't have given the American idiot his job back for causing a load of fuss about nothing.
I used the word earlier today to describe a brand name of scented sweets still on sale from some chemists.......they're for sweet smelling breath

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing,Eng Teach.!! I wonder was that the history behind one of the jokes in Spin City, when the Mayor's computer system could only describe the correct attire for the Mayor's Ball,as "African American" tie and tails ;-)
I spelt the word correctly, with an 'a' not an 'e'. It also had a 'd' on the end, as it is in the dictionary. It's not a word in common use any more, but all the same, it appears to be considered offensive as it has been deleted! Gobsmacked!

I remember that lindpinda. It was funny.

I get what you are saying SirAlec, but I still think once the media story broke and the word defined, the big deal should have been over.
It shouldn't have been a big deal in the first place. The PC brigade go too far.
I remember that, EngTeach. I'm all in favour of PC myself, but that wasn't PC, that was stupidity.

Can't believe this site is excising the word too - perhaps it thinks its members are equally stupid and trying to be abusive while unable to spell.
