I am a guitarist of many years standing. I now want to learn either the sax or the clarinet, purely for pleasure. Which should I go for? How much to pay?

Doesn't it depend slightly on the kind of music you want to play? With the clarinet you could join the school orchestra or pretend to be Woody Allen and play ragtime jazz. With a sax you have pretty much the whole of jazz, soul, rock and pop at your fingertips. And isn't the sax just... well.. sexier?
The clarinet is an easier instrument to play although it is set up the same as a sax, a lot of saxofonists learn to play clarinet first. All depends on how long you have left in this world.
