Hi, I have just moved into a flat which has no form of heating.  There is no gas supply to the flat so central heating is not an option at the moment.   I know of storage heaters, and convector heaters etc, however do not know which is the best, most economical  - Can anybody help or suggest which would be best, what the costs would be etc?  Thank You....

It really depends how much money you have. There may be no gas supply yet, but for about 500 you can get one plumbed in. At least, that's how much I was quoted by the gas board 2 years ago. I wouldn't bother with storage heaters. I have them, and they really are prehistoric. They heat up at night (when electricity is cheaper) and churn out heat during the day, when you are at work. By the evening it is cold again!! I would use an electric plug in heater (not convector as they are more expensive, and not very good for your lungs) temporarily. But do look into having gas put in. You will add to the value of your flat (if it is your flat!). You could always run different types of heaters and check the meter. See which one uses up the most electricity.

If electricity is your only practical or realistic method of heating then I`d go for an oil-filled thermostatically controlled heater used along with a plug-in timer, so you can control the on/off periods as well as the temperature.  Make sure you eliminate draughts as much as possible while keeping a degree of ventilation.  There`s no point in trying to heat cold air blowing in from the street.

Because you live in a flat you may not be allowed to use bottled gas [safety reasons] and nobody wants to use paraffin heaters any more because of the amount of condensation they produce.

Hope that helps a bit.

Thank you all for your advice..
go to local plumbers outlet and ask for information on electric boilers these run the same as gas, so you can have water filled radiators and hot water tank.
