it's the network port on the computer, it's used to connect your computer to others computers or devices so they can transfer data between each other.

My ethernet port connects my computers to my modem and router. :)

It is usually a method of using broadband instead of wireless. More secure and less troublesome to set up although you will need a router as the interface. Some routers come with the modem installed.
