The egg came first, because it wasn't actually laid by a 'proper chicken' ... the chicken that hatched was a hybrid ...so the egg came first.

Most scientists believe that birds developed from reptiles. Since most reptiles to this day reproduce by laying eggs, it's rational to assume that the first bird-like creature came from an egg, too. It would then have laid eggs and - over millions of years, perhaps - birds as we know them slowly developed and produced different species. The present-day chicken is one of these, but - 'way back when - its great-great-grand-daddy almost certainly came from an egg.

The egg pre-dated the bird, if you believe in evolution. Of course, fundamentalist believers in the Bible will say that God created all the creatures as creatures. In that case, the bird pre-dated the egg. Take your pick!

Well since chickens are the women of the species, certainly the egg came first.
obviously the egg came first. many people go on aobut it giving us all the ethical science rubbish. basically the egg was produced due to a fusion of cells and chemicals that produced the egg and the chicken inside it
Can people stop asking this question. Ok, here we go. there are two answers.
1. if you believe in God then the chicken came first, because God created it and it appeared on the earth as a fully grown chicken. (which i don't believe by the way)
2. new species are created when there is a genetic mutation in the birth process, so, (to explain it slightly simpler) a non-chicken creature laid a mutated egg, this hatched and became a more chicken like creature which bread with another non-chicken and so on, until the chicken was created.

The first Chicken Egg had to be laid by a chicken or it wasn't a chicken egg. It was an egg from a fore runner to a chicken. Just to put a credible counter argument to all you Egg firsters. This is the third answer and does rely on specifying a chicken egg.

the egg - reptiles lay eggs & birds evolved from reptiles

the egg or the chicken itself? ...hmmm...? Imagining the chicken did not evolve from a reptile overnight (theory differs on the speed of evolutionary leaps) or from one generation, the question becomes "how did the reptile (or whatever species) mutate to spawn a chicken, or chicken egg?

Environmental factors might indicate the chicken coud've come first from an already-alive-reptile. A certain species may have recieved some element from nature (radioactivity?) and litterally changed into a chicken, or to something producing chicken-like qualities, essentially overnight. And of course from there it would take much evolution to get to the chicken we know of today.

But most likely, the mutations came from biological factors, maybe produced from environmental factors, when strands of DNA in a reptile get all messed up and start forming into confused jumbles inside the egg-producing whatever of a reptile.

I once saw a cartoon in the daily sport where a chicken and an egg were in bed, the chicken is looking all flustered and wound up and the egg is sitting back smoking a cigarette with a speech bubble coming out of it saying "Well that's answered that one then".

Hope this helps.
