Creative Zen - why synchronize?

Being a bit thick here - every time I load files onto my Creative Zen it asks me if I want to synchronize... but doesnt explain what it means or why I should do it.... HELP!

as with the ipod, i assume that youre zen has a media database on your pc. which may differ to your player hence each time you attach it it asks if you want to sync ie match all files up remove/add as necessary.
