It annoys me when I do my supermarket shop and the assistant doesn't hand the receipt over, or she asks if I want my receipt. I always want my receipt, as it is sometimes wrong, almost always in favour of the shop.

Just a little thing, but an annoying thing. I occasionally shop at the local Tesco Express, and most of the assistants seem reluctant to hand over the receipt.

Anyone else have a shopping pet hate?

I never said i didn't care if a customer complained- I said I didn't care as its a simple matter to rectify!!

Sorry, but my shopping pet hates are reserved for other customers. I generally find the staff pleasant and polite and would not do that job for all the money in the world given the sh1t they have to put up with from the public and the management.
1) Heelies in supermarkets are not SAFE. Had my little toenail taken off the other day by some rampant child running or should that be rolling riot.
2) Idiots who stop for a chat and block the WHOLE aisle with their trolleys and then look at you like you are alien life form if you politely say "excuse me".
3) People who fight for the car parking spaces next to the door - ITS NOT FAR - WALK YOU LAZY S0DS (comment NOT aimed at those who are unable to walk the distance of the supermarket car park) hence causing a mighty traffic jam at the door.
4) Dawdlers who can't look where they are going and ram into the back of your heel.

Thankfully, I have my shopping delivered now so the chances of there being a stabbing in Sainsburys have diminished.

No need to apologise Barmaid. The question was "Do you have a shopping pet hate?" , asking for petty peeves about our shopping habits. There was no mention that the pet hate had to be one way, against the cashiers!

Phew chappie, I just read this post and it sounds like you started a riot ;) You make a very good point, and so does everyone else.

I think it was mistys who mentioned people "shunting" you along when you can't go any further forward; that drives me crazy too!
And dawdling customers. It is rare that I ever meet a staff member who is rude, impolite or ignorant, but boy ar the general public all three of those at once sometimes! Find a coffee shop if you want to stand around talking, FGS!

I get wound up when I am stood in a major supermarket with long queues everywhere with over half of the checkouts not operating ,and checkout supervisors just stood watching. Why can't they get other operators on the tills?

I find most cashiers are very polite and pleasant, and my local Tesco Express cashiers are no exception - I have no argument whatsoever against that, it is just that they often automatically throw my receipt away, without even asking if I want it.

And I have to add that Tesco Express are the only ones that seem to do this - automatically ditch my receipt. I often come away without it, because they have ditched it, when what I should do is ask for it (I know it's daft, but I feel like a nuisance asking for the receipt when I have seen them dispose of it).

It was never my intention to cause any bad feeling with anyone - I was just passing a bit of time on Chatterbank, and I think that most people have mentioned their grumbles only because they enjoy contributing to this forum.

The points mentioned are all minor niggles that nobody would even bother to mention to anyone else unless the question was posted on a forum such as this.

Just had a thought about the idea of not giving a receipt to save on paper.

My local supermarket prints the receipt then throws it away, so no paper is saved anyway!

Thankfully I have only experienced this at one particular supermarket.
BOO - I accept that your comment about you not caring whether customers complain is unclear in meaning and could be taken either way.

However, the remark you made previously, about cashiers having to look at the sour-faced customers while asking if they want a receipt, is quite frankly, rude and uncalled for. Customers are not just being awkward in wanting a receipt!

Pa_ul - Of course it is a good thing if you are asked if you want a carrier bag, for obvious reasons. But it is a completely different matter to the necessity of having a receipt for your purchases. How are you going to prove you have paid if there is a discrepancy? Queries over paying might not happen often, but they do happen.

Another point I can mention is - my sister bought a punnet of raspberries at her local supermarket. The top layer looked great, however the raspberries underneath all had fur coats. They weren't cheap. She rang the supermarket to let them know. They told her they couldn't help her unless she had her receipt. Fortunately she had it and the raspberries were replaced.

It is absolutely common sense to take your receipt, even if it is just to check that you have been charged correctly!
One of my pet hates is when I see a bargain on the shelf. I buy it and check the receipt, only to find that I have been charged a higher price than I expected. On going back to the aisle and checking, I find that the ticket underneath the product refers to a different product. Misleading to say the least. The answer is, of course, to read the small print very carefully!

(And before I get a response from disgruntled cashiers complaining that it is sometimes the customer who plonks things back on the wrong part of the shelf - that's quite right, sometimes it is - but not always).

Another annoyance has been mentioned before - those awful, dangerous heelies (think that's what they are called). They are just an accident waiting to happen. Surely they should be banned in the interests of health and safety.

Steve.5, my reply given to BOO (and indeed to all cashiers with that attitude) was based on the following remark:

"Think of the poor old sod (the cashier) having to look at your sour face when we ask you the same relentless questions......... (or words to that effect).

If you read this thread thoroughly you will see that Chappie is not complaining about cashiers being unpleasant or rude or not doing a good job. In fact she remarks (more than once) that she finds the majority of cashiers to be very polite and pleasant).

She is actually complaining that at a particular store cashiers throw her receipt away without giving her the option of taking it, or seem reluctant to give her it. (No mention of her thinking they are being rude, in fact she states quite the opposite).

Her only remark about the cashiers that I can see, is that it rattles her that they don't offer her the choice of taking the receipt. Therefore, I think it very rude of BOO to make the remark about her being a sour faced customer.

I think, in fact, BOO herself admitted that it is a good idea for the customer to take the receipt. And she sort of apologised to Chappie for making the comments.

I think what windywillow is trying to say is, his/her attitude of "we pay your wages" only applies to the cashiers whose attitude to the customers is wrong (if you know what I mean).

I have no gripe about cashiers, they do a cracking job - and one that I couldn't do. In my experience it is rare to find one that isn't polite and patient - and let's face it, the human race is a very mixed bunch.

My mini-moan really was just about this strange habit they have in my local supermarket (if habit is the correct word) of throwing the receipt away before I have looked at it. And I do think this only applies at one particular small outlet near to where I live. I never experience this with the larger supermarkets - they always routinely hand over the receipt. As far as the rest of the service is concerned, they are always very pleasant and helpful.

Oh, one last thing, Pa_ul. Re your comment - "it's their paper and plastic they're giving you for free, it's just taken for granted". I don't expect they really are giving you it for free - the costs will be factored into the price of the stock.

I don't like it when you are looking through the reduced section. You find something you like the look of, but there is no price on it - no full price or no reduced price - no price at all.
