You might have been rubbing you eye in your sleep perhaps. If it doesn't go, see an opthalmologist.
was it blood shot (ie. all the blood vessels were more prominent) or does it look like there has been a bleed?

Do you wear contact lenses?

Is it sore or itchy or gritty?

If you are concerned then go and see your optician

Sorry meglet, you cannot just go and see an ophthalmologist. You have to be referred to them by another medical practitioner (GP or emergency doctor) or via an optician

thanks meglet & york310, it looks like there has been a bleed, starting from the inside & spreading towards the pupil, but it's giving me no discomfort,i don't wear contacts
look up sub-conjunctival haemorrhorage on google images.
probably just a weak blood vessel that was knocked while you were asleep. It can take up to ten days to self resolve as it 'washes' away. sometimes is an indication of raised blood pressure but rarely.

that was brill. info york310, google led me to ask.com and there i found the answer, which said it could be caused by sneezing that i now recall ( phew ) panic over ! many thanks again
I've had this a few times - probably cos I sometimes sleep on my stomach and bury my head into the pillow a bit too much! It looks horrible (the whole white of my eye goes red) but nothing to worry about. Note to self: Stop sleeping on stomach!
