Can anyone explain to me what a freemason is exactly? I read about it and I don't get it. Thanx....

mukkes - try this link http://www.grandlodge-england.org/masonry/what-is-freemasonry.htm people have varying opions as to whether they are good or bad - usually those on the "outside" are negative. I'm not one, but I know several who are and they all seem normal enough.
Hi Fakeplastic - that really made me laugh. You have no idea of the times I've ribbed him about that exact thing! Although he's been a M for years, I only ever went to one Ladies Night. It was boringly hilarious, seeing all the old gals in their crimplene frocks! It just wasn't my scene at all, especially being a young thinking, 'trendy' person. Sorry ladies.
I have been to a couple of ladies nights as well, as our old neighbours took us as guests. Not exactly exciting evenings!! What niggled me was that it took so long to eat our dinner as we had to keep getting up and down and clapping all through the meal, for various reasons.
I just remembered that I went to a ladies night as a guest of a boyfriend many, many years ago. I didn't know him very well. I know I was all dressed up in an evening dress and long gloves, etc. As we sat down at the table, I knocked a bottle of red wine over and it flowed right down to the end of the long table, seating approximately 40 people! He never asked me out again after that!
I don't know really either. I assume it's a society where people help each other out and also help others. You can't apply to join, I believe you have to be invited. They have their own schools and hospitals. I know they do charity work, but they do support each other as well.
I think it used to be mainly there for businessmen. However, I think that it now includes people from all walks of life.
Are there any masons on AB that are prepared to tell us some inside information?
My husband is just joining and mainly it's to do with charity and having a strong moral code. I'm dreading these 'ladies nights' even more now I've read what smudge and fakeplastic have to say! You do have to be invited but you don't have to keep it a secret that you're a member. You do have to agree not to abuse your position though. That's about all I know right now.
secretspirit - please don't be put off by mine & FP's comments. All Lodges differ along with Ladies Nights. I only ever went to one from my husband's Lodge, but have been to a couple of invited ones from other Lodges, which weren't too bad. It's just that some of the speeches can go on & on & on! The music wasn't to my taste either, but you just grin & bear it & dance the night away. Life is what you make it!
