can anyone tell me what lies behind the custom of the mourners throwing earth onto the coffin at a burial?

Hello hollytree , we don't do that , we sprinkle holy water over the coffin , I will see if I can shed light on the earth one though:-) x
It seems to be to represent the future of the deceased. The earth hinting that the body will decay and become one with the earth . It's an ancient rite known as " Earth laid on a corpse "
