Has anyone been watching that program about Stephen Hawking? It's fascinating stuff - string theory, black holes, dark matter, branes etc. The only thing is I find myself concluding it's all basically just the same as religion - ie a load of b0llox that we've invented in order to explain things that we don't understand.
What do you reckon?

Be careful what you say Theland, or you'll be burnt at the stake which of course would be electic, provided from a renewable source. So you may be safe on overcast windless days.
I saw a programme on Channel 4 last year, a scientist on it said it was all to do with solar flares and that he'd bet on whether we'd have a hot summer next year based on solar activity. He said he won every time.
I'm gonna hedge my bets on global warming (for now) having not long cheated death I'm not going to tempt an angry mob of hippies to my door!
i half agree with you theland

yes it is cyclical, but to say humanity has little impact on it is a bit of an outdated view, difficult to maintain with all the evidence staring you in the face.
That's not true Theland

Temperature changes are cyclic but this one is different.

This time the Sun's output has dropped and the temperature has not dropped with it.

We're not however looking at a scorched Earth or "Day after Tomorrow" but in the next 50 years we'll see some significant changes.

The biggest effects will be felt in places like Africa and Bangladesh.

If you think immigration forces are bad now, wait 50 years and see what it's like.

I predict nothing like enough will be done, 3rd world countries will feel the brunt and we'll start to errect a wall around Europe like that the Israeliis have built.

Oh that "cosmic ray" thing has been pretty well debunked everton. It was never properly published to scientific scrutiny.

Unfortuiunately it didn't get the same publicity on Chanel 4 - Wonder why!

Theland be careful if you see Jake coming towards you carrying a dynamo!!
The show was editorally against man made global warming it made no bones about it, it was one of several theories espoused as to the cause and effect of global warming.
Personally I think it's all part of it, part cyclical, part solar, part pollutant and so on. I don't think we're the prime movers in this and I'm as dubious about are ability to alter the weather as Canute was in his ability to stem the tide.
There's research (published/pasted on here) saying the ice caps are'nt shrinking etc, I don't claim to know enough on the subject to speak with any certainty on it.
I just wish they'd stop taking my money off me in it's names sake. At least one chooses to give money to the Parish.
That should get the atheists raging again. ;-)
Everton Why on earth is my personal life such a fixation with you? If you're really that interested, type my name into the search facility and you''ll find the answers to all your questions. I told you, we've been here several times before, and I'm not about to enter into this sort of argument with you again. Now THAT is boring!
I've absolutely no interest in your personal life, those 3 things are the only things I've heard you say with any certainty. You offered these facts to the ether, all apart from your Toryism were volunteeered (although I understand your embarrassment on tthat score) what is tedious is to constantly posti comments were all that is said is that "I disagree" even on a post about belief you expressed only disbelief.
The Americans call it negative campaigning, in your defence I will say that your objections are logical and well thought out I've no objection to the nature of your objections despit what you may think (or ventured to point out earlier), I find it disappointing that someone with your intellect is so reluctant to say positively what they believe in and stand for, I've encouraged you in the past to do so and I will again.
I've got better things to do with my time than to trowel the depths of AB to find out about you, that would be dull and more than a little creepy.
Ah yes, The Great Global Warning Swindle by Martin Durkin. A man so intellectually dishonest that Channel 4 have to issue public apologies about his films.

George Monbiot writes well about him:

This one is better still.

http://www.monbiot.com/archives/2007/03/13/cha nnel-4s-problem-with-science/

In short, Durkin is a mendacious liar and a fraud, and his programme was feeble cr@p.
Everton We're supposed to be talking about cosmology - not about me. Every time you and I meet on any thread on any subject, we have exactly the same thing from you. Apart from spouting nonsense, what is your problem? Are you some sort of weirdo?

I've encouraged you in the past to do so and I will again.

that would be dull and more than a little creepy.

Yep!
If I appear to repeat myself it's only because your posts are always to the contrary, that is you never actually say what you're for. You believe in ghosts and have had supernatural experiences but you have no evidence to prove it although you don't feel the need to prove anything to anyone nor do you need others to tell you what to think or how to interpret it, you've been to churches and felt a spiritual presence, but you're not a spiritulist etc etc. If you actually stated what you believe in it would probably be an interesting thread, in fact you could do that post a thread purely about what you believe in and ask others for their opiniions, preferably in about 3 weeks as I'm off to meet the in-laws and escort future Mrs. Ev to her sisters wedding in China.
I've read your post on the other thread and I'm not even gonna go there.
P.S.
Thanks for the misquotes, good of you to pay attention.
TTFN. ;-)
Jolly good. Bye bye.
