Not taken out, Scorpious, but I know plenty of people who've had treatment where a disc's been put back into place, or had an op to fuse things together. The latter can be quite difficult. A relative in Australia was warned that if she had an operation on her lower back, it could result in her not walking again. She took the chance, and it worked, but I think it all depends on what the problem really is.
if a disc is taken out it can be replaced by an artificial disc, however i was advised to have three vertibrae fused, held together by two rods and six screws which stops them from moving, thus not causing any more ware on the discs, i also had a bone graft to keep the bottom of my back solid and unable to move. but then after time pressure goes onto the discs above,

Hi,
I've had two discs taken out of my low back and fused and a fixed cage with screws but that was around 10 years ago now and there is so much else out there. Its best to research like mad, especially American sites which are much further on than us and always get a second opinion if you want to go for it. I've had four in total and success is short lived before the next disc starts causing problems. I go onto a brilliant website called www.painsupport.co.uk which has lots on back problems. Hope that helps.
I had the nucleus of two discs L4/L5 and L5/S1 (just above and below the waist in the lower back) removed a couple of years ago due to suffering an accident.

The op was carried out by a neurosurgeon.

Prior to this I had been in agony and suffering from left sided leg and buttock pain. I also had problems with my 'water works', which was most embarrassing as I was in my late 20's at the time and was always nipping out for a wee!

The pain has been reduced by about 50%. I have another two discs above the two that have been removed that are in bad shape and will probably have to go as well at some point.
