There are a lot of drivers on Britain's roads who only seem to do 40mph no matter what kind of road they are on. I thought maybe they were being extra cautious on fast roads but they still do 40mph in urban areas where they should be doing 30mph. Can anyone tell me why 40mph?

I would particularly like to hear from someone who does this.

Thanks

You've heard of "Sleeping Policemen"?
These are Sleeping Drivers - they have determined a speed at which they feel they don't need to concentrate on their driving, they reach that speed, then they just go to sleep...
Yes, and most of them seem to drive Nissan Micras.

It seems predominant in a certain age group and type of person - of 'mature' years and smug about their 'safe' driving. They probably class themselves as perfect drivers.

Sorry, as I don't drive like this myself (and I am probably in this age group!) I cant tell you why they can't see what there problem is. All I know is it is extremely irritating when you can't get past them on the deregulated roads and then they are miles ahead in the 40mph areas. They are irritating and dangerous.
Sorry, I meant 30mph areas and not 40mph
it gets worse at night- I am sure a lot of people are convinced that the road doesnt exist at night outside the cone of their headlights and if they go too fast they are likely to fall off the end of the earth- likewise with the braking at night every time a car comes in the opposite direction
I know how you feel burnhal. I have a heriditary problem with night vision and bright lights (linked with migraine) and find it really difficult to drive at night - hence unless it is essential or I know the road very well I really don't drive after dark.
Perhaps their cruise control has jammed at 40mph?
Irritating drivers?
Are these people related to those who feel compelled to turn on their rear fog lights as soon as visibility drops below three miles ?
Or the ones who drive to work (assuming they possess sufficient intelligence to have a job) early in the morning in semi-darkness and fog, but feel no need to have any lights on ?
Or those who brake at every bend and curve in the road ?
But the worst by far ( and the most dangerous) are those who creep along at an unreasonably low speed, but then accelerate as soon as anyone attempts to overtake them.
What about the ones who trundle down a motorway sliproad at 40mph to join traffic doing 70mph plus I always seem to get behind one!
I have a sign in the rear window of my car saying
warning, this vehicle is fitted with indicators.
