I've answers for 14ac and 19ac - eliot and rough but can't convince myself why. The clues are: "author John almost making comeback "and "unshaven general". Many thanks for any assistance

john is US slang for toilet. Remove last t and reverse.

I suppose rough can at a stretch mean unshaven and general as in a rough figure.
