Does anyone know who sang the above song, I think it was a minor 60* ***. Was it 'Nirvana', possibly not the more recently named group.

It was Nirvana.  They were a 60's band.

Got to No34 in 1968, Nirvana are described in the Guinness Book of Singles as a UK / Irish male vocal / instrumental duo.  "Rainbow Chaser" being their only chart entry.
