I love cats, I have two. (2)

The number in brackets is for montycrieffs benefit who may have misinterpreted my post.
Doc - I used to beg a rotty owning friend not to let the dog in when I went round. It used to jump up and down at the kitchen window and the sight of it made me breathless with fear.
I have to disagree in as much as dogs are not 'essentially a wild animal'. They are a domesticated carnivore. So they all have to potential to attack and do damage to another animal (or human).
The problem lies not with one breed (in this case the Rottweiler) but with the owners who have them - as has rightly already been said - as a status symbol...to make these owners seem more 'macho'. To make us all say 'WOW! Aren't they powerful?'
As long as owners like these have these strong powerful breeds but take no responsibility of training, socialising and keeping them under control, these 'accidents' will continue to happen.
But killing all Rottweilers will not stop the problem. Killing all these irresponsible owners would make more sense to be honest.
If you erradicate one breed, another one will take its place as the favourite for these cavemen.
And also not all Rotties are out of control, it all depends on if their needs as companion animals are met and if they are kept responsibly.
It is the fault of the irresponsible breeders who breed from dogs with poor temperaments and then sell them to unsuitable owners. Correctly bred and reared Rotties owned by responsible people will cause no more problem than any other breed of dog.

I'd make the breeders have a character assessment done (on the dog, although maybe also on themselves!) before breeding is allowed. I would also not allow any to be bred/sold without registration papers so they can be traced back to their breeders.

As for muzzling these dogs, the majority of these attacks occur on home premises where the dogs would not be muzzled.
