How many is too many!?

Now, we all love to treat our pets!
Every night when I go to bed, I feed my cats treats, I have a treat jar on my bedside table, and a kitten who runs upstairs everytime I get of the sofa in the evenings and cries to tell me its bedtime lol!
Im just wondering, how many is too many treats for cats? The jar takes around 5 of the Whiskas treat packs (the ones in the cat face pots) and we get through about a jar & a half every week!
I scatter treats on the floor for the older cats, & Cefa sits on my chest and wedges her head in the jar.
I have 7 cats, and just wondered if treats every day is ok?!

Just to add, none of my cats are over weight at all, they are fed Whiskas dry food and have a casserole dish of water down at all times!
I dont think i could bare the evil looks and hassle i would get if i stopped the treats, but I dont want to be possibly making them unhealthy (like to much junk food is bad for people!)

Hi wiggal....I dont think there is anything wrong with giving cat treats,for one thing as they crunch it gives their teeth a clean up and we have treats so why not for our kitties.My dogs eat the most treats but then I think dogs can be more greedy than cats .I would also point out that none of our companions are overweight , so moderation in all things as you well know when cats want some thing they get it by persistence I know my three do..bless em.

Hello. Not got a clue my poor cat Billy is quite overweight according to the vets the last time I took him, and he dose'nt get may treats as he wont eat them whiska's treats but every now and then I do treat him to the odd can of tuna and his real favourite whole crab meat lumps. He really seems to like fish as the last time I got a Chinese that contained king prawn he went wild and would leave me alone, I do manage to grab a couple of prawns myself before he gobbles them down without touching the sides, But what can you do. :)

My lot get leftover dinner put down for them every night, they eat anything from Indian to pizza! They loved the lasagne i made in the week and even finished off the pasta!

Sometoimes I even go to bed at 9pm because Cefa looks so sad sat waiting on the stairs for me!

I try n sneak Cefa a treat, but they all know the noise, no matter how quietly i try to open it! and come flying into the room and trample me into the bed!

It will porbibally be the smell of the treat as well beacuse I know my Billy looks at me very interestedly when I go to the cuttlery draw to get anything out as that is where the can-opener is but he waits a moment to se if he can smell anything before going wild, because as soon as the opener bites into the can to release the goodies inside he's off Meeeeow, give me some now. Thats if I don't trip over him. You just gotta love it.

I shouldn't think that a few each day would be a problem - as long as they get a balanced diet and don't have too many.
My cats don't like the treats so I have given up on them but they do like all sorts of other things. Florence loves tuna but Daisy will only eat it with mayonnaise on it! Florence also likes cheese but only cheddar or brie - not edam. They are so fussy about these things.
wiggal - I love the idea of your cat wedging her head in the jar - she is obviously a lady who knows what she wants!

Hey bensmum!

It was funny the other evening, Cefa wedged her head in, but as shes only tiny, Leo got his paw in beside her head and pawed her out again!
He then stuck his head in & she was soo peed off as she couldnt get her paw in as he is bigger an his head was a perfect fit! The look on her face! ' MUM! get him out of my jar!!!' She was not at all amused!

I complain about mine especially when Florence wakes me up at 4.30am on a cold dark morning but I get so much amusement from them I couldn't be without them. Cats have such character

Some of mine love catmip toys,
We get them from a women i work with, her daughter knows a women who is disable but runs a cat sanctuary from her home, and she knits little balls and fills them with cat nip. Cost 70p each but I buy 10 or 12 every so often. My cats go nuts for them, Smokie Jo goes all soft and dribbles all over them, then goes mad, but let him sniff a cat np drop & he runs away n hides!

I don't know about cats and treats but I'm always in trouble because apart from my weddings, christenings & funerals suit Every pocket i've got has dog treats in it. I dont just give them Max but to every dog I think deserves one, especially the ones waiting for their person outside a shop, they always look so sad at being left alone, waiting for their man or woman.

This post made me smile. Dont suppose one of you guys would like to adopt me, I am fully house trained, well almost. I am not so keen on the cat or dog treats but I love tuna, crab, chinese, indian, pizza, cheese etc, anything really except brussel sprouts.

Reminds me of a colleague who would cook her two cats a roast chicken for dinner. She said they wouldn't eat precooked chicken, it had to be cooked by her from scratch, she wouldn't adopt me either :-o(

Paddywak....please don not feed dogs that you don't know. My last Dane had a very delicate stomach and could only tolerate certain foods. People [whom I assume meant well] would feed him treats only for him to be pooly for days...and I mean chronic colitis!!!

wiggal....feed on!!!! a little of what they fancy does them good. My kittys get a tin of tuna between them every morning + dry food down all day, and are perfectly healthy being given the odd added treat...one of mine loves dried venison hearts :O}

My two are fussy little critters. Frankie likes roast beef (so do I) but his sister doesn't - which is just as well as Frankie growls at her any time she goes near his roast beef.

Cat (and dog) sweets are good for them - unlike some of the stuff we mere humans eat.

My two are not fat, but they eat too many sachets of meat a day. Sometimes it is easier to give in to their demands than listen to 'somebody' howling and trying to climb your leg. Or even some thug waking you through the night to demand food.

They are trying to be good for Santa Kittie - but they never quite manage to keep out of trouble.

One of my cats favourite treats, which they get every so often is a tin of tuna blended up with raw egg, Ive never seen something get scoffed down so fast!!

My lot arent fussy, and will eat anything at all, but I think thats more becase they know if they dont eat it quick, the other 6 will get it and they will of missed out!

wiggal. with regards to the treats, I reckon the proof is in whether your cats are perfectly healthy or not (and from the sounds of it they are) so its obviously not doing them any harm. Can I ask why your cats only have dried food but then pig out if they get the chance, on human food?

Im guessing that after getting the same dry food everyday to eat, any thing else seems like a luxury and will be eaten very quickly so no one misses out!
