Which battle was it, where an English force commanded by a Frenchman beat a French force commanded by an Englishman?

I reckoned it had to be early eighteen th century, because the French force could have been commanded by a Jacobite.

I should have added above that the result of this particular battle was the opposite of what you said...ie the British lost! Maybe there was quite a different battle - but with similar command structures - that ended as you claim.

I got lost in the detail, it came up in a quiz ten or twenty years ago and I also wondered what the answer was.
