The Beatles were at No1 for 6 weeks from 26/03/66 and spent 13 weeks in the charts.
Not sure where you got that info, astrodog, but I'm afraid it's wrong. The Beatles version of Yesterday was not released as a single in the UK until 1976, when it reached number 8. The highest charting version in the UK was actually by Wet Wet Wet (would you believe?) who reached number 4 in 1997.
Oops, sorry. ASTONdog!
anyone know why it wasnt released in the 60's when it was penned ?

I've just checked to make sure but The Beatles did get to No1 as I said earlier. Yesterday was on an EP;

 A side; Yesterday / Act naturally

 B side; You like me to much / It's only love.

Info was taken from beatles-discography.com.

I think we have a UK/US conflict here. Yesterday was indeed no1 for the Beatles in the USA.
anything more to add Astrodog?
Again I stand by the info from the beatles web page I gave earlier. Yesterday was released on Parlophone GEP8948mono as an EP in the british charts.
I think that it was released in the 60's as a ep, but not as a single by the beatles. Therefore it didnt recieve a chart position. Not sure though.
I think PatTheRat may have solved the riddle. There was a point during the 60s when it was decided to exclude EPs from the singles chart. Certainly the 1976 single release is the only mention of it in the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles.
