I would go for the Audi, had one for a few days recently while my car was in the garage and was very impressed, also take into consideration resale value I am aware they are both from the same group but you will find the Audi will hold price better. bad points yep hopefully not needed but spares and repairs costly.

Go for the Audi. Very nice to drive, won't feel or sound like a diesel.
Downsides yes parts and repairs expensive (use an idependent garage rather than main dealer) and the theft / jealousy factor, though it depends on where you live / work and where you'll be leaving it parked.

Same thing really just a a different badge.VW will probably be cheaper.Are we talking New or used? If used bear in mind that a new A4 has just been launched so it'll have a knock on effect with the resale value of an old shape model.If new deffo the A4 the Passat looks Cra*p especially with that nasty bit of Chrome on the front grille
