janetls - Try this site click here. Second item down, the V-slicer. If you believe the TV Ad it's the dogs'. Does come with a saftey guard so you can't slice your fingers. If you get one let us know how good it is or isn't. Ta
I have had a V slicer for about 10 years, it does what it claims to do very well, slices thick and thin, and does differing thickness 'chips', you can even dice with it but it's a bit of a faff. A 'proper' mandolin should allow completely variable thickness whereas with this you just get the two options. Also this doesn't give you the ability to cut 'crinkle' slices. For the price I have never regretted buying the V, oh and Paulz, you can still slice your fingers on it ;-)
janetis...I recommend a Benriner Japanese Mandolin, they are the best and usually one of the cheapest and you can buy spare blades for them. Try online at Nisbets they are probably between 15 to 20.
