Give the new startup airline Zoom a try. They actually fly to Toronto, but there are fares as little as 29 from YYZ-ORD.

Also...Icelandic Loftlieder Airlines, more known as Icelandic Air may still be serving chicago..

IF you're only travelling one-way and have no baggage, you 'could' do what's called a 'further point' purchase. Many people don't realise (and the airlines don't want you to know this' but fare constructions all have a 'routing' base. For example, when I want to go to New York...and I prefer not to go to Kennedy at certain times of the day, instead preferring to go to LaGuardia...I book my flights LHR-ORD-LGA...then onwards...or simply return from JFK...

IF there's a specifc destination other than Chicago, please let me know. I'd be pleased to give you some examples...

Best of luck

Fr Bill
American Airlines fly direct from Manchester but Continental (via Newark) are cheaper, with return fares (for the sample dates I tried, just after Easter) of around 465.

Delta can get you there via JFK but I couldn't find any prices to match those of Continental.

Give these people a try...but be forwarned, most offers will be on Northwest, which will mean transit over Detroit or Minneapolis...

Have you tried Kayak for comparisons? They feature what is called 5th freedom carriers..(those are airlines who are not nationals to either of the destinations they fly to or from) ...for example...Singapore Airlines fly between Heathrow and Chicago.

I wish you the best of luck

Fr Bill

btw..I'd always prefer pretty much anything over Northwest!

Mr Spudqueen would agree with VillageVicar - he flew Northwest last year and swore he would never fly with them again! If you want a cheap flight you will probably not be able to fly direct - one or two changes might get you a cheap flight. If you want direct then as has been mentioned American Airlines (AA) fly direct from Manchester to Chicago - I flew with them two years ago on this service.

thanks for all your info. the flight isnt actually for me but for a friend who is a bit nervous about travelling alone and i know for a fact she wouldnt want to have to change flights. will let her know what you have said, thanks, any more infor still welcome!
Bubbles: If your friend is concerned, then I'd recommend American Airlines over the others. As I recall, it's 767 service on the Manchester run, which have a seating configuration of 2-3-2 . It's a nice aircraft, relatively comfortable and any transit your friend may need to do at O'hare is relatively easy as well.

If you're not in the UK, the International portal is:

I wish you well

If you're looking solely for direct flights, you seem to have most of the options already.

The Manchester Airport website lists the only direct flight operators as American Airlines, BMI, Finnair and PIA. However, the Finnair website does not refer to the route (which suggests that the service, which might have only been a code-share arrangement with one of the other operators anyway, has been discontinued). I couldn't find any relevant information on the PIA site but their fares are usually very high. You state that you've already tried BMI and I've suggested American Airlines. That would seem to cover all of the options.

For some sample dates, just after Easter, American Airlines quote 647.20 for direct flights. They also offer 603.70 via JFK but, if you could persuade your friend to change flights, it would be much cheaper to travel with Delta, via Newark.

Otherwise, for direct flights, the only option would appear to be to travel to another UK airport.

thanks Chris, the cheapest i could find was about 580 with bmi all inclusive. dont know whether best for her to book now or hang on to see if a cheaper late availability, presume though that they may get nearer as time goes on. no way will she want to change unfortunately!
AA are starting a new route into Stanstead next year - they may have some startup special prices to tempt passengers. Personally I always wait till BA have a sale and their prices [and quality of airline] are very good.
