have you got a box on the outside of the house? if so and it is not run off the mains then it could be this
is the bleep coming from the external wall box or the internal panel?
The external bell box on my house alarm is fitted with a battery back-up system as is the internal control panel. So if your system is similar, it could well be your bell box battery which has now failed. Hope you get it sorted.

Have you had it serviced recently? You should have it serviced once a year
It is common for people to blame an alarm system for the low battery warning of smoke detectors so disconnect them first to see if the bleeping stops making sure you reconnect them. If this is not the cause all alarms have what is known as a chime facility, when switched on will make a sound every time a detector or contact is operated. To check this do a walk test and open any doors etc on the system to see if you can make it bleep.

Hi corganiser, the bleep is coming from the internal panel.

Thanks lockman, I have disconnected the battery on the smoke alarm, but to no avail. It can't be the chime facility as it still bleeps at night when we are tucked up in bed and no pir's are being triggered.
what is the make & model of the alarm panel? does the external sounder have its own battery?

Hi lockman its a concept 6 about 9 years old and and Im not sure about the battery in the outside box because we had it replaced about 4 years ago, I cant find any paperwork for it, cheers.
Hi emmalee Is the system is maintained with a professional company under contract? if yes contact them. If the system is wire free it may be warning about a detector low battery state. If the system is hard wired then I have never come across this problem before but to prove it definitely is the control panel disconnect the mains and the internal battery, this will activate the external sounder for 20 mins and then it should stop. Wait and listen for your beeping sound, if the beeping still exists it is nothing to do with the alarm and you can reconnect the mains and battery. If it is coming from the alarm let me know and I will look into it further. Good luck

Thanks everyone for all your effort, it seems that according to my husband I am a woman and therefore stupid, as he has found an unused smoke alarm in a box behind the fridge with a low battery inside!! As I had no idea it was there, and he has put up with the beep for over a week too, why am I the stupid one? Sorry for wasting everyones time, but the answers were great and at least I'll know what to try if the alarm ever starts to bleep!!
