It's my girlfriend's birthday in September and I want to take her away for a long weekend. However, money is tight, so it has to be in the UK. Can anyone recommend somewhere beautiful? The name of a good guesthouse or hotel would also be appreciated. Thanks.

Whereabouts are you and how far afield do you want to travel? Will you be driving or taking the train/bus? There are so many lovely places in the UK and some great hotels and B&Bs, but a little more info would help first!

I live in London. I have a car, but can really only afford to spend no more than 40 per night for a double room, at the absolute maximum 50 (I am budgeting 300 for days out and retaurants/evenings out). She loves beautiful scenery and good food and she would probably enjoy a spot of clubbing whilst we are there, but this isn't a necessity. She is also very into history and historical buildings.
Take a look at 'The Langtry Manor Hotel' website in Bournemouth. This was built on the orders of Edward VII for his mistress Lilly Langtry. It's a very small amount more than your budget, but once you take a virtual tour I think you'll feel it's worth it. I've been for a meal and the staff are dressed in Edwardian clothes. Wherever you decide have a great time.
To go with the above post the shops and clubs in Bournemouth are second only to London - plenty of history and scenery as well.
Brighton. Great clubs and dozens of great restaurants. You've got the South Downs within a few miles with fabulous cliff top walks including Beachy Head and Seven Sisters. Other places fairly nearby include Chichester for a bit of history, Arundel with its Camelot like castle etc. Plenty of places in the North of England that compare but Brighton's not much more than an hour from London and southern weather tends to be a better bet.
WARNING: Whatever you do, DO NOT come to Southend On Sea. I live here and it is soooo not as good as the Southend Tourist Board make it out to be. Have a good time wherever you go!
