harpic limescale remover worked for me
I agree with diane1706 - Harpic limescale remover works. As they say on the adverts, most toilet cleaners just bleach the limescale so you can't see it but Harpic actually removes it.
Limelite do a toilet cleaner too which I like. And Mr Duck. Have you tried leaving products on it over night? You can also get toilet cleaners in the form of a tablet which you leave to fizz away over night - something like that may help too. Robert Dyas should have a good selection. Also I find Waitrose really good for things like that.

If it's really bad, get your marigolds on & attack it with a pan scourer or even a knife. Scour between each overnight soak with limescale remover & eventually you will shift it. I speak from experience!
Then give it a rub with the loo brush every day to keep it at bay.

Best of all, install a rainwater catchment system so there's no lime in the water!
I am sure that I saw on TV that you make a paste with vinegar and bicarbonate of soda and layer that on and leave for a few hours then is softens the limescale on you should be able to remove it with a loo brush.
When we had a pub we used Spirits of Salts... You get it from Iron Mongers (and some shops like Dyas or Leyland) it is an acid and the fumes are really strong... But it cleans everything (and I mean everything -no matter how old) I moved into a flat recently with a nasty brown toilet and chucked it down and its pristine now...
use a pumice stone (this works and does not scratch)
harpic limescale remover really does work - just leave it soak for a few mins.
