baby vomiting...
As most of you know know i recently had a baby girl. She is now 8 days old, She started breast feeding on the first night fine but on the second night a midwife had to give her formula as i wasn't producing enough colostrum/milk to satisfy her hunger. Only 2 days ago i started to get engorged breasts and was able to start expressing and breast feeeding.
After breast feeding she seems to vomit a lot which is worrying us. She didnt do this as much when she was on formula. The midwife said it was ok to mix formula and breast milk although we're trying to get her feeding on breast milk only now that i'm producing enough.
Can anyone enlighten us? We're pretty concerned. x

I don't know if this will help, but when my daughter was born I breast fed her. After a month my nipples were so sore I couldn't continue. I was advised to replace 1 breast feed with formula for a few days, then 2 feeds aand so on.
but as soon as i started to do this my daughter would vomit most of the breast milk up, she was ok with the formula though.
After 2-3 days of this i couldn't take it anymore as i was very sore and she was always hungry. So I just stopped the breast all together and gave her formula. She was fine with this.
I on the other hand ended up with breasts like cannonballs for a while!!
I wouldn't think It's anything to worry about, but talk to your midwife about it. maybe she just needs to get used to the change over.

Nat, I had this problem when I had my daughter.....I didn't breastfeed, but she vomited when she had her formula...turned out she had some mucus on her chest. They just put a little tube in her mouth and sucked it out (I know sounds awful), but it worked and she was fine after that. Btw that was 25 years ago.....so things would have changed now.

It takes a few days to get breastfeeding established, luckily nature has provided babies with the ability to manage until the milk comes in properly.
Breast milk, especially at first, can spurt so much that there is overflow. Try spilling some milk & see how far it goes, she's probably not bringing back as much as you fear.
It really does look more alarming than it is!
Personally, I have to say it was the most worthwhile thing I did, worth working through a little soreness at first to reach the fun bit - food on tap, cuddly times with my baby, knowing I was doing the best thing for my baby while losing my pregnancy weight at the same time!

thanks a lot girls! she has been fine today! i'm going to let Daddy feed her my expressed milk at the end of the night and i'll breastfeed during the day and early morning.
Talking of overflow i just had a serious one! milk dripping down my legs as i tried to change my bra!!lol

Looking good! The let down hormone does tend to work on both sides at once, so one side is being swallowed while the other sprays in the air!
It is sometimes possible to catch the overflow in a bottle, and either feed it later, or freeze it. In no time (it seems!) you will be feeding a little solid, probably ground rice, which can be mixed with the real stuff.

Just had a thought - in a week or two, try feeding her in the bath. It's a very sensual experience, all that lovely bare baby skin next to yours, and I highly recommend it.
