I am 51now when I first had a motorbike I was allowed up to a 250cc bike on my provisional licence.
But now I am only allowed up to a 125cc bike and need to take a CBT test is that correct.

Yes you do! Your car licence gives full moped licence (up to 50 cc) but only provisional motorcycle, which is what a 125 is classed as. This must be validated by a current CBT. Speak to mates to find a reputable training school for advice or visit the DSA website.
