I want to paint over a stained / varnished hard wood door and was going to sand it down first then apply a white under coat followed by a white gloss paint. Can anyone tell me about the benefits of using a satinwood paint instead , either a oil based or a water based variety , which should I choose? What undercoat should be used with satinwood paint.? Thanks.

The only real advantage of using satinwood is that it's easier to apply than gloss.
I'd give the door a good rub-down,followed by 1 undercoat then a couple of coats of satinwood. I'd also recommend that you use oil-based paint..although it's more difficult to apply, & takes longer to dry,it'll last much longer than water-based paint.
I'm a decorator, & personally I prefer woodwork to be either gloss or eggshell. I find satinwood to be neither one thing nor the other. Hope this helps.
