3 week old baby girl - will start off by "shouting" rather than crying - if this continues wether we console her or not it will develop into a full blown crying session ( hissy fit ! ) of which there is no calming her down - any advice please would be welcome.

I think you'll find a 3 week old baby is not capable of throwing a hissy fit. A 3 month would, but not 3 weeks. At there age there are many things that could be worng with her such as wind or colic. Does she raise her legs before or during this time? Also is there a pattern to when she is doing this? ie before or after feeding or shortly before nappy changes? I would recommend you actually speak to your health visitor about this, they would best advise you on what it could be as well as the best solution.

It is NOT colic got that sorted with Colief - during this time of extreme crying which incidenatlly could be before or after a feed she would continually raise and lower her legs as if stamping them up and down.
It is still sounding like colic to me, even if shes had it before and it was sorted, it can keep coming back til around the age of 3 months.
See if this link is helpful and take their advice.....take her to the doctor to have it investigated. http://www.foodreactions.org/colic/
Good luck, hope you get it sorted very soon :)
Another thing, I tried a couple of things when my daughter had colic as a baby, I found Infacol worked best for her.

Please believe me - it is not Colic we are still giving her Colief for it and is not giving her bother now - by the way we tried Infacol and it was rubbish - have been told works for some and not for others.
This seems just to be a crying routine for anything up to an hour and half.
it seems 2 b just girls, im afraid. only advice, a dummy maybe? and if it gets too much walk out the room, with her safe obviously (iam sure u would). sorry not much help, i know. my daughter was like that, shes nearly four, and when she decides on something, thats it. and think weve got the joys of teenagers yet.lol
also could it be constipation (if u bottle feed its quite common), my daughters always suffered with tummy aches from it. Or maybe reflux? i know it feels like it, but it wont last forever, doesnt help you much now. xx
Have you tried not giving her cows milk, either in a formula milk or through breast milk? Infacol and colief will not work if the reason for the colic is a dairy intolerance. I went on a cows milk free diet while breastfeeding and it stopped, followed by soya milk formula (WYSOY) You can buy it but it can also be prescribed if your daughter is better with it. Not that it is a reason to go with it, but it is slighty more expensive than other formulas so it is worth speaking to a GP. Not much space here to relay the research about cows milk and young baby's stomachs not being ready, but there's stuff out there if you google. good luck.
