My branch head at work has a wife who works in HR. She needs to find a post for a partially sighted staff member who cannot stay where she is at the moment. He has decided to accept the staff member into our department and put her on our team. We know she will not be able to do the work, she herself has said she cannot use the system that we use, she is a lovely person, with a gorgeous guide dog and we all really like her, but it just will not work. He is so obviously doing it just to help his wife out, we've talked to him and all he says is "well it's head of branch decision and that's all there is to it" I can see lots of sticky times ahead. Any views?

As you seem to appreciate, the company can't dismiss her by dint of her disability making her unable to do her job. Therefore they have an obligation to put measures in place which would allow her to use 'the system' - allowing her extra time to learn to use it, offering her adaptive software, a personal assistant, etc etc. - which, incidentally, they can probably get funding for.

If the lady still finds the job is unsuitable for her then it's up to her to say so, and to say why.

Thanks both of you for your answers, sorry I didn't respond before, been away with no computer (!)

It now seems that the powers that be cannot adapt the system sufficiently enough for the lady so she may not be joining us after all, boss-man went mad when told this and stomped around in a mood for a few hours, muttering about how his wife wouldn't like this, that's what was so annoying, to know he's only trying to save his wife's face.
