What criteria are used to check to see if you have a record?

I guess name, date of birth and place of birth.
If then on an application form you fibbed about your date of birth and conveniently left out your middle name for instance then the search would come back blank - yes?

Do they cross reference with your NI number or something?

Cheers.

I can't answer your question about whether or not a search would come back blank.
This would be picked up on your ID documents that you are requested to take in - the person/s checking your ID will see. Of the following documents you must provide two of these
* birth certificate
*passport
*driving licence
*marraige certificate (if female)
*divorce information (if applicable)

As you can see, unless you have forged documents, you wouldn't get away with it, as, a birth, or marraige certificate is required for a passport and driving licence, which provides your date of birth, etc. Other documents are also required as evidence and if these are not provided, the application will not go ahead. I worked for HR last year doing CRB Disclosures.
